Big Girl Samantha

We are getting ready for the new baby to come (5 weeks till our due date) and trying to get Samanantha through a few transitions before then. So far we have transitioned her from her crib to toddler bed and now we need to wean her from her pacifier and hopefully get her potty trained (maybe wishful thinking).

As many of you may know heather is prego with baby #2! We had the twenty week ultrasound and doc said everything looks good. We are now 24 weeks along and our due date is March 24th. We opted not to find out if it is a boy or girl since we are pros at having babies now , and we wanted to have some surprise. But heather and many other people feel like it is a he. Let us know if you got any good names besides Barack ;-)

Food Inc.

Here is a documentary worth checking out. It is exactly why we have made it a priority to eat whole and organic foods. We as consumers have a lot more power than we think. If this documentary motivates you to change, a next great resources is "Nourishing Traditions" by Sally Fallon. Here is a list of changes we have made:

1. We buy local and organic fruits and vegetables
2. We don't buy packaged items like cereal, crackers, cookies, etc.
3. We soak our grains and flours to make them more digestible
4. We eat sprouted bread
5. We take whole food multivitamins and a teaspoon of Cod Liver oil each day
6. We drink raw, whole milk
7. We buy natural free range chicken, wild caught salmon and Country Natural Beef
8. We eat vegetarian at least one day a week
9. We cook on cast iron
10. We compost and recycle everything we can and only throw away one garbage can a month
11. We have dreads in our hair (joke)

Fall in Vancouver = lots of leaves

Fall is here which means apple: bread, pancakes, butter, sauce, cider, and pie. It also means stoking the fire and doing more homework than a swedish school boy. In these parts rain plays a major role in the fall, got to love it.

Summer Garden

The garden is doing well! I read a gardening book that gave me a great receipe for an organic fertilizer (4 parts cottonseed meal, 1/2 part limestone, 1/2 part bonemeal). The corn is head high now and to my right are the potatoes. Below our some green beans, cucumbers, zukes, tomatoes and swiss chard that we picked. Gardening is kind of my hobbie now :-)

Samantha's Cast

Our little baby has a cast :-( She was walking with Heather to the mailbox when she fell and buckle fractured her tibia. She couldn't put any weight on her foot and she did not stop crying so Heather had our neighbor Milly drive them to the hospital. Kind of a fluke but the doctor said Samantha will be good as new in about four weeks. Samantha has been so brave and the cast hasn't seemed to slow her down at all!

The Garden

One thing we love about living in Vancouver is gardening. Everything grows so well here! We harvested our first crop a few weeks ago, radishes. We are reading this book called Nourshing Traditions and it is getting us stoked on eating the way people use to before industrilization. We found a local source for ranch eggs and raw goat milk. The goat milk taste like a farm though :-( One day we would love to have some land an plant an orchard, have a garden and practice some grass-based animal husbandry.

Here is a picture of Samantha when we kind of went camping in June. She loved it so much... but then we had to put her to bed in the tent and she was not into it. So she cried and cried and cried until finally at 11:30 pm the camp host came up to our tent and asked if our child was o.k. So we got the hint and packed up everything in the dark with pouring rain. We got home at 1:30 in the morning and we made a vow to never camp again this summer! But isn't she so cute?
